Cordyceps literally means clubhead, club or swollen head, is derived from the Greek Kordyle and refers to the shape of the fruit body of this mushroom. Sinensis means China and refers to the origin.

Cordyceps grows naturally on 3000 to 5000 meters high moist meadows, at the foot of trees. It is a parasitic mushroom, of which the mycelium only grew on a rare Tibetan caterpillar, the Hepialus armoricanus Oberthuer.
